Adaptive Virtual Inertia-Damping System Based on Model Predictive Control for Low-Inertia Microgrids

In this paper, an adaptive virtual inertia-damping system based on model predictive control (MPC) is proposed to enhance the frequency dynamic performance of islanded microgrids (MGs) considering a high penetration level renewable energy sources (RESs). Recently, large amount RESs replacing traditional generating units, causing undesirable effect MG stability and inertia, thus weakening MG. Therefore, handles challenge robust with during contingencies. The online MPC strategy estimates gains inertia (VIC) (i.e., damping coefficients) in VIC compared conventional constant values using MATLAB/Simulink under numerous disturbances uncertainties. Moreover, effectiveness verified by comparing its fuzzy logic control, which designed estimate only inertial gain. results highlight that upgraded, successfully supports low-inertia MGs load fluctuations.
